The first product of my Capstone is my essay, which focuses on the purpose of the corporation and how it affects ethics in business. In the essay, I examine two prevalent opposing viewpoints on which interests a corporation should prioritize: the shareholder theory vs. the stakeholder theory. The thesis is, "While the focus of a corporation should be to protect and increase the economic interests of its shareholders, both investors and managers have a responsibility to promote the individual rights of employees and the common good of the people in their pursuit of profit". The following two products will provide more real-world examples and cases of the interplay between business and ethics. One will be a series of interviews with people working day-to-day in the world of business, from sales to finance. Their perspective will an interesting source of insight from regular professionals who may face ethical dilemmas throughout their daily work. And finally, my last project will be a showing of the movie The Big Short, which focuses on the story of the 2008 financial crisis. This is one of the most egregious examples of unethical business, and I hope a viewing and discussion will help raise awareness of the dangers that lie in business done without ethics.
